Maria Fang-od Oggay practices the art of Kalinga tattoo — aka “hand-tap” — an ancient tattooing process of the Butbut tribe that involves soot, bamboo shoots and pomelo thorns. Though the process is lengthy and can be painful, the designs created by Fang-od represent pride and beauty and are unlike any modern-day tattoo. At 100 years old, she is the last living Mambabatok, or traditional hand-tap tattoo artist.
